NEPOOL - State Senators Williams and Fonfara remind Connecticut customers of their switching opportunity

By Gil Coelho, Market Manager, NEPOOL & ISO-NY, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA

Connecticut State Senators Donald E. Williams and John W. Fonfara held a press conference January 15 to make people in Connecticut – and especially small to medium-sized businesses and residents – aware of the opportunity they have to save money on their utility bills by switching to a third-party electric supplier.

The press conference was held at Trumpf Inc., a large manufacturer of fabricating machinery located in Farmington and one of the many Connecticut businesses that has already switched to a competitive supplier and saved on their electric bill.

A Public Act (07-242) was passed in 2007 that required Connecticut utility companies to inform their customers about third-party suppliers. However, this has proven less efficient than expected, and as Senator Williams, the Senate President Pro Tempore, mentioned, “…many families and businesses in Connecticut are missing out on real opportunities to reduce their electric bills.” He encouraged anyone looking for more information to log on to the website (image source: www.ctenergyinfo.com).

Senator Fonfara, who co-chairs the Energy and Technology Committee, also provided current switching statistics. While 90% of large businesses and 40 to 50% of medium-sized businesses have switched, only 30 to 40% of small businesses and 10 to 15% of residents have chosen a competitive supplier. He also mentioned that these low figures may be related to the fact that most providers don’t have the resources to market to customers individually. He reinforced the benefits, saying customers could be saving “up to $5-10 dollars a month” and urged them to consider switching as soon as possible.

The press conference was positive news for third-party suppliers in Connecticut. Legislation that would have eliminated the ability for small and medium-sized businesses to choose their electric suppliers was passed in the State House of Representatives last year, but did not become law. Support from Senators Williams and Fonfara is critical to defeating similar legislation again this year.
