PJM - Pennsylvania Market Entry Update
By Kevin Stafford, Market Manager, PJM & MISO, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA
Since September 30, 2009, there has
been a dramatic increase in both residential and non-residential
electricity shopping in Pennsylvania’s PPL Electric Utilities
territory, as customers anticipate a range of increases due to
the lifting of rate caps.
The capped rates – frozen at
1997 levels for more than a decade – officially expired after
December 31, 2009. While residential customers are experiencing
increases of approximately 30%, commercial and industrial
customers face increases ranging from 18% to 36% if they choose
to stay with the utility.
Over the past 3 months, 13% of
PPL customers – about 147,000 residential accounts and 29,000
non-residential accounts – have migrated to competitive
suppliers in order to save money and take advantage of energy
products that better fit their needs.
As a leading
supplier of electricity to commercial and industrial customers,
GDF SUEZ Energy Resources has been working with a large number
of businesses in the PPL Electric Utilities territory since June
2009 – offering substantial savings opportunities, unique
product structures and both demand response and renewable energy
credits designed to help them prepare for 2010 and beyond.
Our success in assisting businesses in the PPL market over
the past several months has allowed us to expand our focus to
the markets of other Pennsylvania utilities.
On December
31, 2010, rate caps will expire for the metropolitan
Philadelphia area (PECO territory), as well as the larger
geographic regions of MetEd/Penelec and West Penn Power across
the state. GDF SUEZ Energy Resources is currently planning its
entry into these regions and expects to be ready to price and
contract with business customers in those utility service
territories well in advance of the market opening.
We
encourage customers of PPL Electric Utilities and Duquesne Light
to contact an experienced GDF SUEZ sales representative for a
price quote. For customers in the PECO, Met-Ed/Penelec and West
Penn Power territories, stay tuned for more information on
specific GDF SUEZ events in Pennsylvania.
