Deregulation in Maryland
Depending upon your current utility and rate class, capped generation rates will expire in a staggered manner in 2004 and 2005. If you remain with your utility service after that date, you can expect to pay a market rate for wholesale electricity plus an administrative fee and taxes. The administrative fee does not apply to supply from a competitive supplier such as GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA. Since there are no switching restrictions, minimum stays, or exit fees after these dates, you are fully able to shop for an alternative electric supplier.

Utility fixed-price rate cap expiration dates for commercial and industrial customers:

  • Conectiv Power Delivery - June 1, 2004
  • BGE - July 1, 2004
  • PEPCO - July 1, 2004
  • Allegheny Power - January 1, 2005

What happens when you choose a new electricity supplier:

  1. The new supplier notifies the old supplier and utility that you have changed suppliers.
  2. The new supplier transmits utility account information to the utility in order to enroll you as a customer.
  3. The utility confirms, by letter to you, of your new supplier selection and the date your new service begins.
  4. The actual change of supplier occurs on the meter reading date following a successful enrollment.
